Chapter 21

Rachel had wondered all day how the church was going. Of course, she couldn’t go over there and see. That would be obvious. More obvious than she could afford to be. Still, she did wonder. However, after school, she forced herself to go to Mrs. Carrasco’s, get the kids, and go home.

When she pulled up, it was with sadness that she realized he wasn’t going to come out of that door and down those stairs. No. He was moving on, and real life was back.

Should he stop by? At one time it would have seemed such a simple question. Now it was bound up in other questions like what happened if he did, and what happened if he didn’t?

Her mother would ask. He knew that much, and what would he tell her?

There are no easy answers. He could see the teacup, chipped and cracked, and he knew she was too. But was love enough? Was his love enough?

Finally because he couldn’t justify missing spending time with her if he was here anyway, he turned the pickup onto her street and forced his nerves to settle. What he would find at that house was anybody’s guess, so he didn’t even try. Stopping at the curb behind her car, he gathered his courage and popped the door handle. “God, I hope this is the right thing to do.”
